Getting to and from the airports
O’Hare International Airport is located in northwest Chicago at the end of the north branch of the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) blue line train. The CTA train system is called the “L” or “El” because most of the system is elevated above street level. In the airport, follow signs that say “Train to City” to the blue line, which runs 24 hours a day to Chicago’s loop and west side neighborhoods. The L-train ride from O’Hare costs $5.00. You can purchase tickets at machines at the airport (the same train to O’Hare costs the regular $2.50 standard fare). The trip time from O’Hare to downtown is approximately an hour. To get to north-side neighborhoods on the lakefront (including “Near North,” where you will find the Newberry Library), you will need to transfer to another train line or a bus. If you will be bringing a great deal of luggage, you may prefer to take a cab or shuttle service from the airport.
Midway Airport is located in the city’s southwest, at the last stop on the CTA orange line. Again, depending on where you are staying, you may need to transfer to another train line or a bus, or may opt for a cab or shuttle. The orange line train to downtown takes about an hour. Cab rides take roughly 40 minutes to an hour (or more), depending on traffic. At morning or evening rush hour, the trains are often the fastest option.
Lyft and Uber operate out of both airports, and rates will vary. Shuttle services also are available at both airports; information counters are located in the lower level of O’Hare near the baggage claim area and in the main lobby area of Midway. To review airport terminal layouts and ground transportation, please visit the city’s airport webpage: www.flychicago.com.
